The Three Leading Causes of East Haven Auto Accidents

Though manufacturer defects and adverse conditions may play a primary role in many East Haven car accidents, the vast majority of automobile crashes are as a result of human error.  The best way to ensure that East Haven roads are safe for all drivers and passengers is to be aware of the most significant causes of car crash, and make a mental note to avoid participating in any such activities.  Here we will take a look at the top three causes of car crash in East Haven.

Impaired driving

Driving while impaired is a category which covers many kinds of dangerous driving states and behaviors.  The most common kinds of impaired driving include driving while intoxicated and driving while drowsy.  Everyone knows that a motorist must be 100% sober and 100% alert in order to be best prepared to operate a motor vehicle.  Considering the fact that driving under the influence of drugs, and driving while drowsy, can both impair the driver to the same extent as alcohol, it is advisable that all East Haven drivers commit to avoid driving while impaired

Speeding

Many people think of speeding as something that is primarily done on the highways.  But in fact speeding in residential neighborhoods and commercial areas can be every bit as dangerous, if not more so, than speeding on the interstate.  The next time you find yourself going significantly over the speed limit, reduce your speed.  Not only will you save gas, but you may save someone’s life.

Driving distracted

Driving while distracted is attracting a lot of media attention due to its prevalence and the dangers associated with it.  Often times people feel that they simply cannot pull themselves away from such distractions as cell phone usage and eating while driving.  But, drivers must realize that whatever the distracting activity is – it can wait.  As an increasing number of states pass anti-distracted driving laws, the public will hopefully continue to become aware of its dangers and cease to engage in these dangerous activities.

East Haven Observes National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.  Police departments and safety professionals across the country are teaming up to help spread the word about dangers of distracted driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is giving grants to police departments across the country as part of its participation in the National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.  The purpose of the awareness drive is to call the public’s attention to the hazards involved in distracted driving, in an effort to reduce auto accidents, injuries, and fatalities on the nation’s roads.

As part of the Awareness Month the NHTSA will expand a program, which was piloted in Connecticut, called “Phone in One Hand. Ticket in the Other.” The program which ran from 2010 until 2013, is now being rolled out in other states.  According to the NHTSA the program was a success, seeing decreases in not only texting while driving but also in general cell phone use among drivers.  The next phase of the program will be called “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.”

New Haven authorities are expected to participate in the National Distracted Driving Awareness Month by cracking down on distracted driving while educating the public on the dangers of the practice.

Dogs and Distracted Driving in East Haven

On any given day motorists in East Haven can be seen riding with their dogs in their cars.  While taking the dog along on the road can certainly be a pleasurable experience, when the dog is riding in the car unrestrained, the resulting situation can be very dangerous due to dogs’ unpredictable nature.

A recent survey showed that 52% of dog owners, who travel with their dogs, pet their dogs while driving.  One out of six allows their dogs to sit on their laps as they drive, and a shocking 13% actually feed their dogs while driving.  Though interactions with man’s best friend can help make the commute more pleasurable, this kind of interacting with the dog while driving can be extremely dangerous.

It is important that all drivers who travel with dogs properly restrain their dogs while driving.  This is not only for the driver’s safety, but also for the dogs.  In the case of an accident, a restrained dog is likely to suffer if less serious injuries than a dog which is unrestrained.  Additionally, there have been hundreds of cases of dogs jumping out of windows and sunroofs of moving cars.  This horrible situation can also be avoided by properly restrained if the dog.
