East Haven Woman Suing a Police Officer

A woman from East Haven is suing a police officer from the town on the basis of age discrimination.

Virginia Klump, aged 74, of East Haven, is suing police officer Robert S. Brockett over an incident which happened in the Shop Rite parking lot on Foxon Road in February.

The lawsuit alleges Brockett accused Klump of hitting a car with her vehicle in the parking lot on February 24 and then took her license and refused to give it back to her which her lawyers say was due to age discrimination.

Klump maintains she had not hit a car and asked Brockett show her the damage she was supposed to have caused, but Brockett had already told the driver to leave. Klump then asked to see video footage which Brockett looked at but would not allow her to see it. He then agreed that she had not hit another vehicle but still kept her license. Klump then spent several weeks without a license which has only recently been reissued.

The lawsuit states that Klump had an impeccable driving record and was in good health.

A spokesperson for the state Department of Motor Vehicles said that license suspensions are not given by law enforcement but are handed down by the state. He said that an officer would only take a driving license due to a medical issue or if the license was suspended.

Woman Fell to her Death Helping Motorist

On Thursday, February 19, a woman fell to her death while helping a motorist involved in a crash on Interstate 91.

According to authorities, the accident happened shortly after midnight when 34 year old Lauren Mohr, from Wallingford, stopped to help some people who had been in an accident near exit 7 on I-91 north.

Elvin Ayala, aged 33, of Branford had hit a car driven by Elizabeth Kranz of Brooklyn, New York which caused both vehicles to spin. Ayala allegedly fled the scene, but was found later in New Haven, and was charged with evading responsibility as well as other charges.

Mohr had just finished her shift as a waitress at Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar in New Haven and was on her way home to Wallingford when she saw the crash. She stopped, called 911 and was waiting with the victims for the police when it appears she stepped backwards and fell over the wall and off the highway bridge, falling 40 feet to her death. Police are still investigating, but think maybe another vehicle passed close by to cause her to step back and then slip on the ice and fall.

Mohr was taken to Yale-New Haven hospital where she was declared dead.

Fewer Accidents than Forecast in Blizzard

The blizzard which swept through Connecticut on Tuesday resulted in a travel ban but fewer accidents than forecast.

According to the governor there were only 11 accidents with one minor injury on state roads during the blizzard. He said that a city plow collided with a utility pole in Middletown which led to the road being closed and a power outage which affected hundreds of people. However, most of those people had service back within a few hours.

Metro North services were cancelled until trains could move safely between Grand Central Terminal and New Haven.

In New Haven, the Office of Emergency Management reported 12 plus inches of snow, with 240 cars being towed for parking ban violations, but apart from that it was quiet. In East Haven there were 12 to 15 inches of snow, with crews working round the clock to clear roads.

Drivers throughout the area abided by the travel ban, which made a major difference to the number of accidents. However, travel remained dangerous due to the winds blowing the snow and reducing visibility.
