Crash on Interstate 95 Leads to Traffic Chaos

On Monday morning, 29 February a crash on the Interstate 95 in New Haven led to traffic chaos.

According to authorities the crash happened at around 8.10 a.m. on I-95 southbound about one-third of a mile past Exit 44 which is the Ella T. Grasso Boulevard .

There were six vehicles involved and the state Department of Transportation closed two lanes of the highway until the wreckage was cleared which caused major delays for the commuter traffic.

The crash was cleared shortly after 9 a.m. but it caused congestion stretching back more than four miles to Exit 51 in East Haven.

Two people were taken to the hospital after the accident but their injuries were not considered to be serious. All of the vehicles involved were reported to have minor damage.

A Postal Worker Seriously Injured in an Accident

On Saturday afternoon, August 8, an accident left a postal worker seriously injured.

According to police, the accident happened at around 5 p.m. at the U.S. Postal facility at 24 Research Parkway in Wallingford adjacent to one of the loading docks. Postal worker 52 year old Glenn Ford of Wallingford was hit by a 2007 International 4000 series box truck being driven by 46 year old Joseph Gallo of West Haven, which was trying to back into one of the docks. Having knocked him down, the truck then ran over him with its rear wheels. He was then taken to Yale New Haven hospital with serious injuries.

Gallo remained on the scene and cooperated with police and officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) who are still carrying out the investigation. So far no charges have been filed.

The truck is registered to FMP Transport LLC in East Haven, which is a contractor for the postal service.

Woman from Branford Seriously Injured in Boating Accident

Very early on Tuesday morning, July 7, a lady from Branford was very seriously injured in a boating accident.

According to Branford Fire and Police Departments, the accident happened shortly after midnight on the border between East Haven and Brandford in an area between Payne’s Point and Kelsey Island near the Farm River.

A female, thought to be a passenger in the boar had severe injuries to her left arm, her face and her back. She was taken immediately to Yale New Haven Hospital in critical condition.

The male operator of the boat was treated at the scene and did not need to go to hospital.

It appears that a rope from the stern of the boat had fallen into the water and become tangled in the propeller which may have caused the boat to swerve suddenly and the female to fall out. She was then hit by the boat when in the water.

The accident is being investigated by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the Branford Police Department, and the United States Coast Guard.

Meriden Author Remains Critical After Accident

On Sunday, June 14, Meriden author, Laura Van Wormer was in a car accident which has left her in a critical condition.

According to police, 22 year old Wilian Chavez-Sanchez, of Bridgeport, was driving the wrong way during the early morning hours on Sunday on the Wilbur Cross Parkway (Route 15) in Hamden when he hit Van Wormer’s car at 3.30 a.m. Van Wormer was driving in the left lane near Exit 60 when the accident happened.

Van Wormer was taken to the surgical intensive care unit at Yale-New Haven Hospital with serious injuries and Chavez-Sanchez was taken there too but discharged the following day.

Van Wormer is suffering from all of her ribs being broken, a skull fracture and a jaw injury. She also has a clavicle fracture that will require surgery, internal injuries and a very serious injury to her right leg which was crushed in the crash and will need orthopedic reconstructive surgery. She has been heavily sedated since the crash but is showing signs of improvement daily.

Family and friends want to know the status of the investigation and why Chavez-Sanchez has not been charged although police say charges are pending once they gauge the seriousness of Van Wormer’s injuries.

Van Wormer has published 16 books and is an internationally acclaimed author.

Bayonne Woman was Killed in Motorcycle Accident

On Sunday afternoon, May 16, a Bayonne woman was killed after her motorcycle collided head on with an SUV, east of New Haven.

According to Connecticut State Police, the accident happened at around 4.25 p.m. on Route 81, just north of Route 148. Bayonne residents, 47 year old Karen S. Minutella and John Healy, also 47 were travelling north on Route 81 on their Harley Davidson motorcycles with a group of other motorcyclists when they collided with a southbound 2008 Honda Pilot driven by a 16 year old.

Both of them were ejected from their motorcycles. Healey was taken by helicopter to Hartford hospital with life threatening injuries but is believed now to be stable. Minutella was pronounced dead at the scene.

The teenage car driver was uninjured and a third motorcyclist, a 48 year old man from Bristol, was also thrown from his motorcycle when trying to avoid the collision and he hit another vehicle which had stopped as a result of the first crash. He suffered minor injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.

East Haven Man Dies in Snowmobile Crash

Early on Saturday evening, 28 March, an East Haven man died in a snowmobile crash.

According to Vermont State police, the accident happened at around 5.15 p.m. on a VAST trail near Fall Brook Road in Wheelock. Keith Whitney, who was aged 47 and from East Haven, went off the main trail and hit a metal cable which was stretched between two trees leading to a private drive way. When he hit the cable, he was then thrown from the snowmobile. His companion who was riding with him called 911 and members from the Sheffield Wheelock Fire Department and Lyndon Rescue responded. He was then transported to the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police have said that the investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

Woman Fell to her Death Helping Motorist

On Thursday, February 19, a woman fell to her death while helping a motorist involved in a crash on Interstate 91.

According to authorities, the accident happened shortly after midnight when 34 year old Lauren Mohr, from Wallingford, stopped to help some people who had been in an accident near exit 7 on I-91 north.

Elvin Ayala, aged 33, of Branford had hit a car driven by Elizabeth Kranz of Brooklyn, New York which caused both vehicles to spin. Ayala allegedly fled the scene, but was found later in New Haven, and was charged with evading responsibility as well as other charges.

Mohr had just finished her shift as a waitress at Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar in New Haven and was on her way home to Wallingford when she saw the crash. She stopped, called 911 and was waiting with the victims for the police when it appears she stepped backwards and fell over the wall and off the highway bridge, falling 40 feet to her death. Police are still investigating, but think maybe another vehicle passed close by to cause her to step back and then slip on the ice and fall.

Mohr was taken to Yale-New Haven hospital where she was declared dead.

Ice Storm Leads to One Fatality

A severe ice storm on Sunday in Connecticut led to several accidents and resulted in one fatality.

According to New Haven police, the fatal accident happened at around 8 a.m. at North Frontage Road in New Haven. It appears that 88 year old Elizabeth Mohr, of Woodbridge, lost control of her vehicle and hit a utility pole. Although local nurses who were at the scene of the accident tried to help her, her injuries were too severe and she died.

There were so many accidents around the state the same day that residents were urged not to travel until noon on Sunday.

Greenwich police reported collisions all over town, not only vehicles but also pedestrians falling over. In New Canaan there were numerous accidents and several vehicles were abandoned on the roads and highways.

There were dozens of accidents on Interstate 95 between Bridgeport and Greenwich and in addition there was a multi vehicle crash near Exit 87 with six people injured.

Another ATV Fatality

On Saturday a Bridgeport man was killed in an ATV accident in Monroe.

According to Monroe police, the accident happened around 6 p.m. when 29 year old John Compton, together with a two girls, aged two and six, were riding an ATV on Turkey Roost Road. Compton then hit a curb in the dark and the quad rolled over and all three were thrown off.

Compton was unresponsive in the road when police arrived, and CPR was performed. He was taken to St. Vincent Hospital where he died of his injuries. The two girls were not seriously injured but were taken to area hospitals, treated and released to their parents.

There have been both deaths and injuries from ATVs in the area last year, including a Western Connecticut State University football player who was killed in June while riding on his family’s farm in Ellington.

Between 1982, when ATVs first became popular, and 2011, the last year for which information is available, 44 people died as a result of ATV accidents in Connecticut, and of that number, seven were 16 and younger.

Looking at the statistics across the nation, there were 11,688 ATV fatalities for the same period, with 2,865 of the victims 16 and younger and 1,226 under the age of 12.

Man Charged Following Fight with Police

A 28 year old East Hartford man assaulted police officers following a traffic accident.

According to police, Joshua Suarez of Hartford, who has 51 previous arrests, crashed his unregistered car into a Jeep at Broad and Mountford streets. Inside the Jeep was Edgar Burgos, an off duty Hartford police officer.

Burgos, approached the car and told Suarez not to drive off. Suarez swore at the officer and drove onto the sidewalk, then got out of the car and started swearing at Burgos again. Burgos called for backup and Suarez fled in his vehicle.

Police officers then arrived, pursued Suarez and stopped him in the area of 568 Franklin Ave.

There followed a fight between Suarez and another police officer and eventually, when more police arrived, they managed to control Suarez.

Police went on to say that they found six packs of crack cocaine in Suarez’ car.

Suarez, who is currently on parole, was charged with assault on a police officer, possession of narcotics, engaging police in pursuit, driving under license suspension, driving an unregistered car, reckless driving, evading responsibility and driving without insurance.
