On Thursday, February 19, a woman fell to her death while helping a motorist involved in a crash on Interstate 91.
According to authorities, the accident happened shortly after midnight when 34 year old Lauren Mohr, from Wallingford, stopped to help some people who had been in an accident near exit 7 on I-91 north.
Elvin Ayala, aged 33, of Branford had hit a car driven by Elizabeth Kranz of Brooklyn, New York which caused both vehicles to spin. Ayala allegedly fled the scene, but was found later in New Haven, and was charged with evading responsibility as well as other charges.
Mohr had just finished her shift as a waitress at Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar in New Haven and was on her way home to Wallingford when she saw the crash. She stopped, called 911 and was waiting with the victims for the police when it appears she stepped backwards and fell over the wall and off the highway bridge, falling 40 feet to her death. Police are still investigating, but think maybe another vehicle passed close by to cause her to step back and then slip on the ice and fall.
Mohr was taken to Yale-New Haven hospital where she was declared dead.
